Alexander Thomson Study Centre in Caledonia Road Church, Gorbals, Glasgow
A FLY-THROUGH WILL BE AVAILABLE SOON - KEEP CHECKING BACK FOR THIS AND FOR UPDATES.

Proposals by The Alexander Thomson Society for the remains of the former Caledonia Road Church in Glasgow, built in 1857 and vacant since 1962, and to be known as 1 Alexander Thomson Place, are progressing at a steady pace.
The proposal comprises the conservation of the ‘A’ listed remains of the former church and the development of several galleries and a museum dedicated to the life and work of Alexander Thomson, with a café, studio spaces and ten serviced two person apartments for short term letting. Outwith the building a public place to the north will provide the arrival point leading under the new building to a courtyard around which the main elements of the building are accessed from.
The entire project will be owned and managed by the Alexander Thomson Society, providing the organisation with a publicly accessible base from which to operate to continue to further promote the work of Thomson.
The current owner of the former church, Glasgow City Council, has supported the Society and its plans from the outset, providing a total of around £510,000 of grant funding to date, enabling the Design Team to complete all work in association with the Planning and Listed Building applications, and to progress the project to the preparation and submission of a Building Warrant Application in early 2010.
The overall value of the construction of all of the work is estimated at £4.5m, and funding for the remaining stages of the project is being sought. As an important element of this fundraising will be the launch of the Public Appeal, again with the support of the City Council, planned for late February 2010, and entitled ‘1 Alexander Thomson Place – a Place for Thomson’.
